Restormel Castle

Picturesque circular castle ruins which sit on a mound, overlooking the peaceful countryside.  It is estimated that the castle was built in 1090 to control the main crossing point over the River Fowey in the years following the Norman invasion. Despite its purpose though, it wasn’t involved in any military action until the civil war in 1644.

What to do there:

Wander around the castle, climb the castle steps to look down on the remains of the rooms and to take in the stunning 360 views of the countryside. If its a nice day, bring along a picnic as there are nice picnic areas available with great views.

When to visit:

Great in any season and open from March until the end of October. I would recommend to go in the Autumn or Spring when there will be very few people. As the castle ruins are exposed to the elements, bring a raincoat if you expect wet weather. There is a car park on site and tickets are a very reasonable price.

How long will I need:

Allow yourself 1-2 hours to explore the castle and grounds. If you have more time, pay a visit to the nearby Lanhydrock House or head to Fowey for lunch! Restormel Castle is only a 20 minute drive from Rockleigh Place.
